writing book bound in vellum with the bookplate of Charles Powell,
Stationer, London. Book is signed by Eliza Heath with dates November
11, 1787 and October 28, 1788. The first part of the book contains the
index which is filled in. The body of the book contains "cures" and
medical recipes for a large variety of household ailments. Some recipes
are attributed to others including to physicians such as Daniel
Sutton's improved method of inoculation for smallpox or Dr. {William]
Heberden's recipe for the cure of ague. A few recipes are for farm
animals, such as a purge for a horse. Some case histories with recipes
have copied from published sources such as the Pubic Advertiser
(London). Another example is "Directions sent from Holland in June
1723, to the Lord Berkeley, by the Professor Boerhaave and Mons. Van
Osterdyck" concerning the gout. Additional loose pages of recipes have
been inserted into the book.
